Mom Saw It
In the evening, Dad and I were watching a movie while Boons and Nắng went down to the court to play basketball.
They were trying to finish their "Light Exercise" routine to earn 10 HeoCoins.
After a while, Boons ran back upstairs, looking worried:
— Mom, I accidentally threw the ball and hit Nắng on the head.
Right behind him was Nắng, holding her head with one hand and pouting a little.
Before I could even ask what happened, Boons was already rummaging in the fridge. After a bit, he took out a hot pack and brought it to Nắng.
But as soon as he read the instructions on the package, Boons realized something was wrong.
He ran out to announce:
— Mom, this is a hot pack—who put it in the fridge?
Then he went back to look in the fridge again.
Finally, Boons found the right cold pack. He brought it to Nắng, swapped it out, and made sure to explain to me the whole weird mix-up between the two packs.
Nắng sat on the sofa in the room, pressing the cold pack to the bump on her head.
Boons sat across from her and started telling her jokes.
Pretty soon, Nắng's pouty face relaxed. The two of them started giggling together again.
I was still sitting in the living room, quietly watching.
Boons is only nine months older than Nắng. But since Nắng is his cousin, Boons still calls her "big sister."
But that night, he really looked like an older brother.
He knew he had hurt her.
He didn't run away or blame anyone else.
He figured out how to take care of her, double-checked when he realized he grabbed the wrong thing, and sat with her to cheer her up.

I didn't say anything.
I just quietly opened the HeoCoin app and gave Boons a small reward, along with a note:
"You took responsibility when you hurt Nắng. You found the cold pack, took care of her, and made her laugh. I really appreciate how you handled it."
A little later, I handed Boons the phone to read.
He read it very slowly.
Boons looked up at me.
I caught a glimpse of his eyes getting a little teary, but his gaze was so warm.
I suddenly paused.
It was the same look I used to see so often when he was tiny. Back when he was still in my arms, still nursing, still looking at me like I was his whole world.
When he was weaned, I missed that look so much.
Then Boons grew up. He had school, friends, games, and a world that kept getting bigger. I know he still loves me, but that love doesn't always show up in a single look like it used to.
But that night, that look suddenly came back.
Just for a few seconds, it felt like I was seeing baby Boons from years ago again.
But this time, he wasn't looking at me because he wanted to be held, to nurse, or to be comforted.
He looked at me because he realized I had noticed.
I saw how he took responsibility.
I saw him go find the cold pack himself.
I saw him sit with Nắng and try to make her laugh.
Maybe that happiness was much bigger than just getting a few extra HeoCoins.
And maybe, that night, both of us got something out of it.
Boons knew that his quiet kindness had been seen by Mom.
And I found the look I'd missed for so many years.
A look that only lasted a few seconds, but was enough to fill my heart.
So full that I felt like I had the energy to keep working, keep growing HeoCoin, and keep trying to be a better mom.
Honestly, in that moment, I felt like I could change the whole world.
Maybe my world isn't somewhere far away after all.
It's sitting right in front of me, smiling with those warm eyes.
