A Really Heavy Day
Every night, our family usually has movie time.
Mom and Dad like detective and psychological thrillers the most – we watch, we guess what happens, and we learn a bit about life too.
But that night, Mom felt a bit tired.
Dad looked at Mom for a moment and decided:
— Let’s just watch something silly tonight. A comedy to lighten things up.
Dad picked Roofman, which was number one trending on Netflix Vietnam.
Boons had already used up his screen time quota, so he wandered over to watch with Mom and Dad.
Since it was a comedy, Mom nodded and let him join.
He climbed up on the sofa, rested his head in Mom’s lap, and watched. 🍿

Then came the part with the main character – a kind man, but really poor.
He went out to steal so he could buy a birthday present for his daughter.
Then he got caught.
He was sentenced to prison… for 45 years.
In prison, he called his daughter, but her mom wouldn’t let her talk to him.
He cried.
Because he was afraid he’d never get to see his daughter again.
His daughter was about Boons’s age.
Boons stared at the screen for a long time, then turned to ask Mom:
This is a comedy, Mom?
Are you sure this is a comedy?
Mom understood right away.
It wasn’t that he didn’t get the movie.
It was that he felt so bad for the man.
He felt so sorry that he couldn’t see anything funny at all.
Mom patted his head, feeling both sad and amused:
— Yeah… it’s really sad, huh.

A little while later, the man escaped from prison.
He hid in a toy store, then got caught while he was half-bathing in the store’s bathroom.
At this point, Boons couldn’t take it anymore.
He sighed:
I’m just going to bed.
Mom and Dad looked at each other.
They understood.
So Mom and Dad turned off the TV and went to the bedroom with Boons.

Once in bed, Mom and Boons turned on an audiobook to listen to a story.
These days, Mom and Boons have been listening to "Nobody’s Boy."
And that night, it just happened to be the part where the old man who took care of the boy got put in jail for standing up for him when a policeman was bullying him.
Mom was lying there listening and suddenly thought:
Poor Boons.
A whole day full of such heavy stories.
But luckily,
He only feels heavy for a bit.
Then he still sleeps soundly. 😴
Mom watched him sleep.
Her heart softened a little.
It’s okay to feel heavy sometimes.
A little heaviness helps you grow up stronger.
Love you so much, Boons. 💛
